Indian local operators hinder cable sector growth
British Business Monitor
(c) 2009. AII Data Processing Ltd.

(ADPnews) - Oct 9, 2009 - Local cable operators in India come in the way of the future development of the country's cable sector, the Financial Times reports.

The 60,000 small cable operators, once the main drive behind the rapid growth of the Indian cable sector, are now seen as impeding the industry from growing further by under-reporting subscriber numbers in order not to pay taxes and share subscription fees.

This comes at a time when efforts are concentrated on the restructuring of the sector in an attempt to boost revenues generated from the pay TV market in India, which is the world's second-biggest in terms of subscriber numbers.

According to research firm Media Partners Asia, 80% of the INR 155 billion (USD 3bn/EUR 2bn) in cable TV distribution revenues in India last year went to local operators.

(INR 100.0 = USD 2.145/EUR 1.456)
